How do I customize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions?

Disney Plus default subtitles are large and might not your ideal on first glance. You can change the subtitles on Disney+ easily to suit your preference. Do note that customisation is saved to your specific device (i.e. whatever setting you did on your TV isn’t going to be synced up for your mobile app).

Edit Disney Subtitles on Mobile Phone — Android, iPhone, iPad

1. Play a movie.
2. For Android users, you’ll find a menu icon in the left section of the screen. For iOS users, you’ll find a variety icon in the top right of your screen.
3. Tap on the icon and select Subtitle and Audio options, then tap the menu under Subtitles to turn them off and on.
4. Hit the X in the upper-right part of the screen to go back to playback.

Adjust Disney Subtitles on PC or Mac

Play a movie and click on the menu icon in the upper right section of the main window. This brings you to the Audio & Subtitles menu, where you change subtitle language. Not using your mobile app or a PC, scroll down below for help on PlayStation, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and other devices. After selecting the menu button, you will find the option to ‘Off’ subtitles first in the list.

Otherwise, select your preferred subtitle language, and go to the settings button on the top right corner of the screen. Click on it to adjust the size, font and color of your subtitles.

Disney Subtitles Keep Coming Back On after turning off

Once disabled during the playback, the subtitles should stay off. But this isn’t always the case, especially with certain streaming gadgets and Smart TVs.

To find the culprit, you should double-check the in-app setting. That is, make sure the Disney Plus subtitles are off. Then proceed to inspect the option on your Roku, Firestick, or any other streaming gadget you might have.

Afterward, you can resume the playback to determine if the subtitles are gone. Sometimes this doesn’t help and you’ll need to tweak the TV settings.

Mind you, turning off subtitles on streaming devices and TVs applies across the board, not just particular content. And the Disney Plus app should be able to override those to prevent annoying issues.

Disney Plus Subtitles Aren’t Syncing Properly

Right off the bat, this isn’t a common problem with Disney Plus. All the content has subtitles at a frame rate that corresponds with the video frame rate. Therefore, a quick restart of the playback or the app itself usually deals with the issue.

Some streaming devices might also allow you to manually change the frame rate, and this can temporarily fix the issue. But as the video progresses the subtitles might drop out of sync again. This goes double if you’re trying to use third-party subtitles.

When streaming content via mobile devices, you should make sure that the operating system and the app are up-to-date. Otherwise, the subtitles might trail behind the audio and vice versa.

Adjusting Disney Plus Subtitles on Apple TV, PlayStation, Amazon Fire TV

Apple TV

1. Go to the Settings app on your device
2. Select General
3. Select Accessibility
4. Select Subtitles & Captioning
5. Select Style
6. On this screen, you can choose a pre-set style, or you can create a new one

Sony PlayStation

1. Go to Settings on your device
2. Select Accessibility
3. Select Closed Captions
4. Check the box next to Display Closed Captions
5. Select Closed Captions Settings
6. On this screen, you can customize the subtitle and closed caption appearance for your device

Smart TV

1. While watching a video in Disney+, select the Audio & Subtitles button at the top right of the video player
2. Select Subtitle Styling
3. On this screen, you can customize the subtitle appearance for your device. Your changes will automatically be saved

Web Browser

1. While watching a video in Disney+, select the Audio & Subtitles button at the top right of the video player
2. Select the gear icon in the top right
3. On this screen, you can customize the subtitle appearance for your device. Your changes will automatically be saved

Note: Some browsers do not support subtitle customization.

Amazon Fire Tablet

1. Go to the Settings app on your device
2. Go to Accessibility
3. Go to Closed Captioning Preferences
4. On this screen, you can customize the subtitle and closed caption appearance for your device

Amazon Fire TV
